NGANAMPA MANTA: OUR LAND FESTIVAL
Iriti-nguru Kuwari-kutu (From Yesterday into Tomorrow)

25th Anniversary of granting of Freehold Title to APY Lands

27 – 29 October 2006

Umuwa, Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands, SA
On November 4th 1981, the South Australian government presented inalienable freehold title of the Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara or APY Lands to Anangu (Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara people). This act firmly placed ownership, management and control of the Lands in the hands of the traditional owners.

2006 is the 25th anniversary of that momentous event and Anangu are marking it with the Nganampa Manta: Our Land Festival: an occasion to honour the achievements of the Elders who fought for rights to their land and a celebration of the Land itself.

Nganampa Manta: Our Land will be held at Umuwa in the APY Lands, 27–29 October 2006 and is not only a celebration of a milestone and what has been achieved in the past 25 years, but also a focus for thought about the next 25 years and all the challenges that people face in the region. To this end, the invitation is extended to other Australians to attend this significant event in its celebration of a major landmark for a region, a culture and a people that are unique yet much challenged by many contemporary issues. It is also a rare chance to gain an insight to life and culture in remote traditional Aboriginal lands.

Nganampa Manta: Our Land provides an opportunity to travel through a beautiful, usually closed part of the South Australian outback to Umuwa in the APY Lands, and meet Anangu and witness their unique culture and life through traditional inma (stories in dance and song), traditional skills (spear making, bush tucker, weaving) and the contemporary art that has made the region famous. The festival will also highlight how the traditional has melded with the contemporary with performances by the legendary Pitjantjatjara Choir, local community bands and children’s dance performance.

Program

A detailed program will soon be confirmed and made available for download.

A range of tours has been organised to assist people in making their way to the festival. (If you are a tour operator or charter service and would like to arrange a tour yourself, please

contact the Ku Arts office, so that we may assist with promotion.) But this is also a chance to drive yourself or join a tag-along tour (contact Ku Arts for details about tag-along tours).

Location & Map

Click for a larger version of the mapUmuwa is located just under 200kms west of the Stuart Highway, along well-made and maintained dirt roads. Although the roads are generally in excellent condition, 4WD drive vehicles are recommended as wet weather can make the roads impassable for non-4WD vehicles. The nearest town on the Stuart Highway is Marla where supplies and fuel (diesel or Opal fuel) can be purchased. All petrol driven vehicles must fill with Opal fuel before entering the Lands. With your ticket you will receive details of the route to be taken when entering the Lands, distances and services available.

Other Activities

A visit to one or several of the art centres of the APY Lands is also recommended to enrich your experience further. Visits to art centres on your way to or from the festival can be arranged on request (to be made on ticket application form).

Protocol

The APY Lands is a dry zone, which means alcohol is not permitted in the lands and all persons purchasing a Festival Pass must comply with any laws currently in force concerning the sale and possession of alcohol and volatile and prohibited substances on the Lands. There are serious penalties for possessing or supplying alcohol and other banned substances.

It is a condition of entry and of your permit to attend the festival that you do not leave the designated route to and from Umuwa and – if stopping en route – stay within 40 metres of the road boundary. Unless separate application is made, you may not enter any communities or settlements other than Umuwa.
